What I Think Of The Morphy Richards Microwave Toastie Maker

The microwave sandwich toaster from Morphy Richards keeps on popping up on my social media feeds (mainly my TikTok one!) and so I got sucked in and bought myself one to test out if it was as good as the viral hype.

As a bit of background, I already own a Breville Sandwich Toaster, which although gets occassional use, it does spend a bit too much time taking up space in a cupboard.

I do also make toasties in my air fryer from time to time (you can see my air fryer cheese toastie here) and although it works well in an air fryer, you don’t get quite the same texture as you do from a sandwich toaster.

And so I was intrigued to see how the MicoToastie performed.

Read on to see what I thought of it and what recipes I have already tried.

The Pros of the MicoToastie

  • The MicoToastie itself is very compact, small enough to fit in a drawer when not in use.
  • It is really easy to clean. Wait for it to cool down and remove the metal inserts from the silicone covers. You can wash them in a dishwasher if you want, but honestly, I just cleaned them in the sink straight after eating my toastie.
  • Probably the most important pro – it does make a tasty, crisp on the outside toastie.

The Cons of the MicoToastie

  • Unlike a sandwich toaster, air fryer, oven, or pan, you can only make one at a time.
  • At the time of buying, I felt they were a bit overpriced, but considering the amount of use it gets, it feels worth it.
  • Although they fit a decent-sized slice of bread, some larger breads might need to be cut down to size.

How Does The Microwave Toastie Work?

The Mico Toasti uses Heatwave Technology to crisp and toast sandwiches in the microwave, mimicking the effect of a traditional grill. Simply butter the outside of your bread, add your filling, and place it inside the Mico Toasti’s non-stick, metal-coated grill plates, which are encased in a silicone shell. Secure the clips, place it in the microwave, and cook for the recommended time—flipping it halfway through for even browning.

How To Use It – Step By Step

It’s really straightforward to use. These are the general steps to follow.

Step 1

Choose the bread you are using, you can use any type of bread including brown, white or even a sweet bread like brioche.

Butter one side of each slice of bread and place them in the toastie maker, with the buttered side on the metal plates.

Next, put your chosen fillings on one side.

Then, close up the toastie maker and fasten down the clips on both sides.

Now, place the Micotoastie in the microwave. Determining the cooking time takes a little bit of trial and error so for your first attempt, or if you are changing bread thickness, go for less time than you think you need, you can always put it back in if it isn’t toasted enough for your liking.

Below are the cooking times suggested by Morphy Richards. For a medium slice of white bread I tend to go with the medium browning suggestion which is 2 minutes and 30 seconds and then stopping and turning it over (use oven gloves for this) and microwaving for a further 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Suggested Microwave Cooking Times (Based on 900W Microwave)

  • Light Browning – 2 mins + flip + 1 min
  • Medium Browning – 2 mins 30 secs + flip + 1 min 30 secs
  • High Browning – 3 mins + flip + 2 mins

Remember that cooking times may vary based on microwave power and personal preference!

Step 2

Remove the MicoToastie from the microwave – make sure you are wearing oven gloves for this step as there will be hot steam coming out.

Carefully remove the toastie, don’t use any metal utensils as they might scratch and damage the plates.

Step 3

Slice the toastie and enjoy!

How Easy Is It To Clean The MicoToastie?

It’s very easy to clean. All the parts are dishwasher safe. When the toastie maker has cooled down just remove the metal plates and either hand wash or put them in the dishwasher.

Quick Things You Should Know About The MicoToastie

  • Microwave-Only Cooking – Not suitable for ovens, grills, or stovetops. Works exclusively in a microwave.
  • Heatwave Technology – Designed to create a crispy, toasted sandwich using microwave power.
  • Flip Halfway Through – For even browning, you need to flip the Mico Toasti midway through cooking.
  • Butter the Outside of the Bread – This helps achieve a crispy, golden-brown finish.
  • Cooking Times Vary – Based on microwave wattage; recommended times are for 900W models.
  • Can Get Hot! – Always use oven gloves when handling after cooking.
  • Easy to Clean – Fully disassembles, and all parts are dishwasher safe.
  • Avoid Metal Utensils – Only use plastic or silicone to remove food to protect the non-stick surface.
  • Do Not Overuse – After 4 consecutive uses, allow it to cool for 30 minutes before using again.
  • Compact & Portable – Great for small kitchens, students, office microwaves, or quick meals on the go.

Is A Microwave Toastie Maker Worth It?

Having used it for a few months I do think it is worth it. I have only tested the MicoToastie by Morphy Richards so I can only speak for that model, other cheaper ones might not work in the same way.

My son loved using it so much during his Christmas break that I let him take it back to university with him for some speedy snacking during study times. And now I’m missing the convenience of a microwave toastie maker so I might just have to buy another one 😉
