Sweet Potato – Adds natural sweetness and a smooth, creamy texture when blended.
Edamame Beans – These frozen green soybeans are packed with protein and give the soup a lovely nutty note. I bought mine from Morrisons but I have seen them in all the main supermarkets.
Onion – Use fresh or frozen depending on what you have to hand.
Garlic Cloves – Frozen garlic or garlic paste works great too.
Ginger – Use fresh, frozen, or ginger paste.
Curry Powder – Choose your heat level (mild, medium or hot).
Vegetable Stock – Use a good-quality stock cube or paste.
Coconut Milk (optional) – I didn’t add this but it might be a nice extra if you have some available.
Optional Extras:
- Chilli flakes – if you like a kick
- Lime – for a citrusy lift
- Fresh herbs – like coriander or parsley for garnish
Using Frozen Ingredients in a Soup Maker

Apart from the stock, all of the ingredients I used were frozen. Edamame beans are easier to find frozen and are handy to have on hand if you want to make a high protein soup with minimal preparation.
I had some frozen sweet potato chunks too so I thought why not try making everything from frozen – it turned out really well, everything cooked through perfectly and the soup consistency was really smooth and velvety.
You can of course use fresh versions of any or all of these ingredients.
How To Make Spiced Edamame & Sweet Potato Soup in a Soup Maker
Preparing this soup is really quick and simple – especially if you are using frozen ingredients. Everything just gets added to your soup maker together with the stock pot or cube and then hot water up to the maximum line.

If you are not using frozen ingredients you’ll need to prepare them first by peeling and chopping the onion, garlic and sweet potato – I never bother to peel the sweet potato, I just give them a good wash.

Once everything is in, set the soup maker off on smooth. It will take 30 minutes in a Ninja Soup Maker – often less in other soup makers.
At the end of the soup maker cycle, check the consistency of the soup and season according to taste.
