Just like cooking frozen chips in the oven, you can also cook frozen chips in an air fryer. And just like how tasty air fryer chips are when made from scratch, so are frozen chips!
Frozen chips are a handy standby to have in the freezer for a quick evening meal and being able to make them in an air fryer helps speed up the process.

Air Fryer Frozen Chips
Whichever type of frozen oven chips you are using – french fries, steak cut, chunky or crinkle cut – they all follow the same preparation process, which is quite simply;
Add the frozen chips to the air fryer basket and set off at 200C (400F) and cook for 8 to 20 minutes (depending on the size of the chips), shaking halfway through to prevent them from sticking to the basket.
Pretty simple!
How Long Do Frozen Chips Take In An Air Fryer?
The length of time it takes to cook frozen chips in an air fryer will depend on both the type of air fryer you have, as well as the cut of the chip.

Thin french fries will take less time than chunky chips so check on them sooner to avoid them burning.
Air fryer cooking time is usually reduced by about 1/3 of regular oven cooking times so you can check the frozen chips packaging and simply reduce it accordingly.
The first time you cook frozen chips in an air fryer keep a closer eye on them so you can judge how fast your air fryer cooks (they seem to vary quite a lot between different makes and models).
But, as a general rule;
Air Fryer Frozen Chips Cooking Times
- French Fries (skinny chips) – 8 to 10 minutes
- Crinkle Cut/Straight Cut – 12 to 15 minutes
- Chunky Chips – 18 to 20 minutes
Shake the air fryer basked at each 5 minute mark. They might be ready in less or more than the times stated above depending on how many chips you have in at a time and how crispy you like your chips.
Do I Need To Use Oil On Air Fryer Frozen Chips?
Most frozen chips already come coated with oil and seasoning so they are usually good to just add straight to the basket. If during the cooking time they don’t seem to be crisping up enough you can spray them with a little oil from an oil mister or low calorie oil spray.
How To Prevent Soggy Air Fryer Frozen Chips
Sometimes chips do come out soggy when made in an air fryer, to reduce this, try not to overload the air fryer basket with chips. They can be touching and put on top of each other but don’t squeeze too many in. Also, give the basket a frequent shake about to ensure all sides of the chips are getting a good blast of air fryer heat.
The more hot air that each chip can get the crispier the chips will be!
