Lentil Soup Maker FAQs
Here are some of the most common questions I get about making lentil soup in a soup maker, along with a few handy tips to help you get the best results every time.
What lentils are best for soup makers?
Split red lentils are the best choice. They cook quickly, don’t need soaking, and turn beautifully soft and creamy in a soup maker. Just give them a good rinse before adding them to the jug.
How many lentils should I use in a soup maker?
For most recipes, 100 to 150 grams of split red lentils is the perfect amount for a standard 1.3L to 1.6L soup maker. This gives a thick, hearty texture without overloading the jug.
Do I need to soak lentils first?
No — split red lentils don’t need soaking, just rinse them under cold water to remove any excess starch or dust.
Can I freeze lentil soup?
Yes! Lentil soups freeze brilliantly. Let the soup cool completely, then portion it into airtight containers or freezer bags. It keeps for up to 3 months and can be reheated straight from frozen in a pan or microwave.
Why does my soup maker sometimes stop or overheat?
If your soup maker stops mid-cycle, it’s often because the mixture is too thick. Try adding a little more stock or water before blending, or reduce the amount of lentils next time.
How can I make lentil soup even tastier?
Add a spoonful of tomato purée, a pinch of smoked paprika, or a squeeze of lemon juice at the end to brighten the flavour. Fresh herbs like coriander, parsley, or thyme also work beautifully.
Why does lentil soup form a thin skin on top when it cools?
That thin layer forms as the soup cools and the proteins and starches from the lentils settle and dry slightly on the surface. It’s completely harmless and normal, just give the soup a good stir or whisk before reheating, and it will smooth out again.
