Can You Cook Pizza In An Air Fryer?

Yes, you can cook pizza in an air fryer. And the good news is there are plenty of different ways to make air fryer pizza.

How To Make Air Fryer Pizza

If you want to make a pizza from scratch with fresh pizza dough, this is the recipe I will be sharing here, but I will also advise on other methods for air frying a pizza and share them with you soon.

Side note: I think pizza in an air fryer tastes better than a pizza cooked in an oven, but I don’t think it’s as tasty as one made in a pizza oven. But the convenience of using an air fryer for pizza is good enough for me!

What You Need For Air Fryer Pizza

Pizza Dough

You can either make your own pizza dough or buy some shop-bought premade. I used Pizza Express pre-rolled pizza dough. Using pre-rolled pizza dough made the process quicker, but it meant I had to cut the pizza dough to get it to fit the air fryer. If you make your own dough or buy one that needs rolling, you can determine the size yourself.

Pizza Sauce

Again, you can buy pizza sauce at the supermarket or make your own at home. I used the above brand that I bought from Tesco – I highly recommend it!

Cheese

The best cheeses for pizza include Mozzarella, Cheddar, Gouda, Goat – or a combination of a few. My personal favourite is Mozzarella, either grated or cubed/shredded.

Pizza Toppings

You can go for a classic cheese and tomato pizza or add some of your favourite pizza toppings. On one of the air fryer pizzas, I added some pepperoni slices. Just make sure that any toppings you add don’t fly around the air fryer – you might need to place some extra cheese on top to hold them down.

Air Fryer

You can use any air fryer to make a pizza, but of course, consider the size of the air fryer basket and how much you can fit in there.

cutting pizza dough

As mentioned earlier, I had to cut my pre-rolled pizza dough to size – if you are making your own or using dough that hasn’t already been rolled out, you can roll your dough to a suitable size to fit your air fryer.

I have made these styles of pizzas in a Ninja Dual Air Fryer and a Cosori Dual Blaze.

You can see in the picture above that rolling out pizza dough to size would be better for the Cosori sized air fryer basket.

I cut the rolled-out pizza dough into four, meaning each pizza was 7 x 5 inches.

Assembling And Cooking A Pizza In An Air Fryer

Once you have cut or rolled the pizza dough to size, it’s time to spread on the pizza sauce.

adding pizza sauce to pizza dough

I like lots of pizza sauce, so I spread it on quite thick – you can make it as thick or thin as you wish.

Next, it’s time to add your cheese. I added grated Mozzarella cheese, but you can use cubed Mozzarella or your favourite cheese for pizza, as discussed earlier.

The pizza can go in the air fryer now, or you can add some toppings. For some of the pizzas, I added some pepperoni and then sprinkled some cheese on top to ensure the slices didn’t fly off from the hot air moving around the air fryer.

Is Baking Paper Needed For Air Fryer Pizza?

You don’t have to use baking paper. You can lightly oil the base of your air fryer basket to prevent it from sticking or use an air fryer liner. I simply used the parchment paper that came with the pizza dough.

Air Fryer Pizza Cooking Times And Temperatures

These times are based on using the Pizza Express rolled dough. Your time may vary depending on the type of dough and how thick it is. Keep an eye on it the first time you make air fryer pizza.

I air fried these pizzas at 180°C for 8 minutes. If you prefer a crispier base, air fry for a further two minutes.

Carefully remove it from the air fryer basket (you might need to use a silicone spatula or oven gloves) and place it on a board to slice.

Try air fryer pizza and discover your new favourite way to enjoy a slice!

Ingredients

  • 400g pizza dough*
  • 400g pizza sauce**
  • 200g Mozzarella cheese, grated

Instructions

  1. Roll out or cut the fresh pizza dough to fit the size of your air fryer basket (leave a little room around the edges)
  2. Spread pizza sauce across the pizza dough.
  3. Sprinkle on the cheese.
  4. Add any additional pizza toppings. You might need to sprinkle some more cheese on top of them to secure them down.
  5. Line the air fryer basket with baking paper, or use a silicone liner. Alternatively, you can brush a little olive oil over the basket.
  6. Air fry at 180°C for 8 minutes, checking on it at 6 minutes to ensure it isn't crisping too much.

Notes

* Pizza Dough: I used a 400g box of Pizza Express fresh pizza dough and cut it into four 7 x 5 inch pizza bases. You can make your own pizza dough or buy unrolled pizza dough and roll it to fit the size of your air fryer basket.

** Pizza Sauce: I used most of a 400g tin of Mutti pizza sauce. You can buy it in most supermarkets or online at Amazon (in bulk). Alternatively, you can make your own or use a different pizza sauce.

Pizza Toppings: you can make a classic cheese and tomato pizza or add some of your favourite toppings. They could include pepperoni, ham, pineapple, chicken, chorizo, and more.
