How To Make Sweet Potato Fries In An Air Fryer

Whether you are making them in an oven or an air fryer, the preparation is the same.

What You Need

ingredients for air fryer sweet potato fries

I used 1 large sweet potato (it weighed 350g), which was enough for 2 small portions.

How many sweet potato fries you can cook will depend on the size of your air fryer. I’ve used various different air fryer models to make these; if you can’t fit enough in the air fryer basket at once, you’ll need to do a second batch to avoid overcrowding.

Slice the sweet potatoes up; the thinner you cut them, the quicker they’ll cook. You can leave the skin on sweet potatoes, as there’s plenty of goodness to be found in there.

I drizzled 1 tbsp. of olive oil over them and tossed them about to try and coat them all as much as I could. You can use another oil if you wish.

I then sprinkled a season-all spice mix over them, about 2 tsp. The mix was paprika and pepper. Cayenne is another spice that would taste great on sweet potato fries, as would a little garlic powder.

Preheat the air fryer to 180 °C (360°F) for a few minutes before adding the prepared sweet potato fries to the air fryer basket.

You can put them straight in the air fryer basket or lay them on an air fryer liner or baking paper.

I cooked them for 12 minutes, giving them a shake halfway through.

At the end of the cooking time check, they should be cooked in the middle and lovely and crispy on the outside. If they’re not, air fry them for a bit longer.

Optionally, season with salt if required.

What If My Sweet Potato Fries Are Soggy?

If your sweet potato fries have not turned out crispy enough, it is likely that they were too crowded in the air fryer basket or on the baking tray in the oven. Take some out and spread them out some more before returning them to the air fryer. You can also spray them with a little more oil to help them crisp up.

Crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside - sweet potato fries taste AMAZING in an air fryer - and they cook in just 12 minutes!

  • 1 large sweet potato, approx 350g, (makes 2 small portions, double up for more)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (other oil of your choice, olive, coconut, avocado etc)
  • 2 tsp spice/seasoning mix (ideas include paprika, cayenne, garlic, pepper)
  • Salt for seasoning once cooked (optional)

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 180°C (360°F)
  2. Peel the sweet potato (optional).
  3. Slice into thin chips.
  4. Drizzle with oil, trying to cover as many fries as possible.
  5. Sprinkle the spice mix over the fries and toss to coat.
  6. Lay prepared fries in the air fryer basket.
  7. Cook for 12 minutes, checking halfway to shake about/turn over. If the sweet potato fries aren't ready, return to the air fryer for a further 2 minutes before checking on them.

Remember different air fryer models can cook at different speeds. Until you are familiar with your air fryer, make sure you check on the food frequently to make sure it isn't over cooking.

If the fries aren't crisping up, try to spread them out a bit so that they are not over lapping each other. You can also spray with a little more oil.
